Arkansas River, Here We Come! April 23, 2007
The Arkansas River 2 ½ hours from Denver is a hot fishing spot right now and within the next 3 weeks until around May 12th will be the site of the famed “Mother’s Day Caddis Hatch”. Be sure to get there early for a spot on the river. Even better, take a wading or boating guide trip for your best chances.
Some of the best flies to use:
Kingrey Better Black Foam body caddis. As the Caddis hatch moves up river to Salida, we've had good success with the black foam caddis. Also, Kingrey's egg layer & spent caddis patterns are a must! #16 Lime Copper John, #20 Para Adams, #18 RS 2 Emergers#20 #20 Wild Turkey Baetis, #16 Black Foam Caddis, Hi Vis Caddis #16, Larry's Egg Layer #16, Spent #16, #16 Bead Head Caddis Pupa, Griffith Gnats 18's & 20's All can be purchased at Anglers Junction! If I can be of further help just let me know. We still have trips open during the hatch too! (courtesy Erin Bull at www.anglersjunction.com , Salida)
Flies: #18 sparkle RSII for the bwo hatch which has been very sporadic. #14/16 High Vis Elk Hair Caddis #16 Holy Grail (on Sunday's only) #14/16 sparkle caddis larvae #12 golden stone. (courtesy Janice O’Shea at www.trouttrips.com)
I would add the Mother’s Day Caddis for dries in size 16. Cdc flashback pheasant tail. For blue wing olives, equally important: nymphs – beadhead micro mayfly 18-20, black or olive biot midge 16-20, emergers – loopwing bwo emerger 18-20, Barr emerger 18-20, juju baetis 18-20, dries – parachute adams 18-20, extended body bwo 18-20, brooks sprout baetis 18-20.
